Clinical Trials for COVID-19 in Tampa Florida
Coronaviruses are a family of viruses that cause illnesses such as the common cold, severe acute respiratory syndrome and Middle East respiratory syndrome.
In 2019, a new coronavirus was identified as the cause of a disease outbreak that originated in China.
The virus is a severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2). The disease it causes is called coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19).
In March 2020, the World Health Organization declared the COVID-19 outbreak a pandemic.
World Health Organization Information on COVID-19
Most people infected with COVID-19 experience mild to moderate respiratory illness and recover without special treatment.
However, some become seriously sick and need medical attention.
Older people and people with underlying health conditions such as cardiovascular disease, diabetes, chronic respiratory disease, or cancer are most likely to develop severe ailments.
Anyone can get COVID-19 and become seriously ill or die at any age.
Symptoms of COVID-19
COVID-19 affects people in many different ways. Most people develop mild to moderate illnesses and recover without medical attention.
Most common symptoms:
- fever
- cough
- exhaustion
- loss of taste and/or smell
Less common symptoms:
- sore throat
- headache
- body aches and pains
- diarrhea
- rash on the skin
- discoloration of fingers/toes
- red and/or irritated eyes
Serious symptoms:
- difficulty breathing and/or shortness of breath
- loss of speech and/or mobility, or confusion
- chest pain
Seek immediate medical attention if you have severe symptoms.
Patients with mild symptoms who are otherwise healthy can manage their symptoms at home.
On average, it takes 5-6 days from when someone is infected with COVID-19 for the symptoms to show. However, it can take up to 2 weeks.
Prevention
To prevent infection and slow down the transmission of COVID-19, here's what to do:
- Get vaccinated whenever a vaccine is readily available to you.
- Maintain safe physical distance. Stay at least 1 meter apart from others.
- Wear a well-fitted mask when physical distancing is not implemented or when in a poorly ventilated place.
- Choose open, well-ventilated spaces over closed ones. Open a window if staying indoors.
- Thoroughly wash your hands with clean soap and water, or clean them with an alcohol-based hand rub.
- Cover your mouth and nose with your bent elbow or a clean piece of tissue when coughing or sneezing.
- Stay at home and self-isolate until you recover if you don't feel well.
Clinical Trials for COVID-19 in Tampa Florida
Efforts are underway worldwide to continue developing safe and effective treatments and vaccines to protect people against the virus that causes COVID-19.
The treatments available today were made possible through the dedicated work of thousands of professionals and participants who have worked on clinical research studies.
Clinical research facilities in Tampa have been an important part of the worldwide effort to understand and combat Covid-19. This includes large institutions such as Tampa General Hospital, the University of South Florida, USF Health Morsani College of Medicine, and several independent research companies like Santos Research Center working together toward a safe and effective solution.
Tampa researchers and Tampa Bay area volunteers are leading the way in studying various medications and treatment protocols that could impact the disease at a symptoms-level for patients and at the cellular level of the virus.
Despite the promising results achieved so far, we continue to need Tampa Bay area volunteers to help conduct further clinical studies to develop new treatments or to test a current drug's effectiveness.
Coronavirus (COVID-19) Research
Vaccines are the most effective way to prevent COVID-19 and protect your health. Increasing vaccine access is one of the primary goals of public health authorities and the research community alike.
Researchers need human volunteers to take part in their clinical trials to better understand the optimal use of these vaccines and other approved treatments.
