How to Control Asthma

Asthma is a chronic inflammatory condition affecting the respiratory system, causing difficulty in breathing. When the airways are inflamed, they swell and narrow, constricting the flow of air. The symptoms of asthma may vary from person to person.

Asthma attacks can happen at any time; asthma is a serious and potentially fatal condition. If not treated correctly, it can lead to serious complications.

Asthma Symptoms

Symptoms of asthma can be triggered by many different factors, and there are also many different symptoms of asthma. Some of the most common symptoms include:

  • Coughing or wheezing
  • Difficulty breathing
  • Shortness of breath
  • Chest tightness, chest pain, chest pressure
  • Fatigue
  • Nose and throat congestion
  • Mucus or phlegm production
  • Changes in sleeping patterns

If you're experiencing some of the symptoms of asthma, you should see your doctor as soon as possible. The sooner you're diagnosed and treated, the better.

How to Control Asthma

Asthma Attack Causes

An asthma attack can be provoked by various environmental factors, existing illnesses, or other related triggers of the condition.

These asthma triggers include:

  • Dust mites
  • Pet dander
  • Smoke
  • Stress
  • Cold air
  • Food allergens
  • Medications (e.g. NSAIDs, beta-blockers, aspirin)
  • Too much physical activity

Other causes are related to those with existing conditions such as respiratory infections, common cold, and Gastroesophageal Reflux Disease (GERD).

Asthma Diagnosis

  • Physical Check-up

Asthma is not diagnosed only by the presence of physical signs and symptoms. The diagnosis of asthma should be based on a complete medical history and physical examination. The process of diagnosing asthma begins with a history of the patient's respiratory and nonrespiratory symptoms.

  • Lung Function Test

Spirometry is used to test if your lungs are in good condition. The procedure involves a device called a spirometer that measures how much air you inhale and exhale and how fast you can exhale.

Tips To Control Asthma

To prevent asthma attacks from happening, you need to avoid their causes and be more mindful of your lifestyle. Here are tips that can help control your asthma:

  1. Breathing exercises can help asthmatic patients to stabilize their breathing. Asthma patients feel as if they are always out of breath because they have to breathe harder.
  2. Avoid smoking and being around people who smoke.
  3. Reduce exposure to certain allergens or irritants such as pollen, dust mites, pets, cigarette smoke, or air pollution.
  4. Take regular medication.
  5. Get regular check-ups.
  6. Maintain a healthy weight.
